Many women with Breast Cancer are candidates for Breast-Conserving Surgery, also called Lumpectomy, Partial Mastectomy or Quadrantectomy. In this type of operation, your Surgeon selectively removes the tumor and leaves the remaining Breast intact.

For many types of breast cancer, the most effective treatment has been surgery followed by chemotherapy. But how quickly patients should undergo chemotherapy has always been an open question.

The major advantage of having oncoplastic surgery is having the ability to remove cancer without leaving a disfiguring defect in the breast. After thorough tumor removal, the surgeon reshapes the remaining breast tissue to try to maintain the shape and contour of the breast. This not only achieves a normal-appearing breast shape after lumpectomy but can often improve the appearance of the breast, without the use of artificial implants or transplanted tissue.

Before leaving the hospital, you will be given a prescription for relief of pain after the procedure. You may take Extra Strength Tylenol® instead if that provides sufficient relief. Do not take aspirin or products containing aspirin for the first three days after the procedure.

Small pieces of tape (called steri-strips) will remain over the incision site and may be removed 10 to 14 days after surgery. The incision should be kept clean and dry for one week after surgery. Therefore, we recommend sponge baths instead of showers the first week. You may bathe in a bathtub if you are able to keep the area dry. Look for redness and swelling, which may be signs of infection.
Do not go swimming until you have discussed this with your surgeon at your follow-up appointment.
